Flink Maswick Law PLLC, a leading litigation and transactions Northeastern New York law firm with a statewide practice that employs state of the art technology to serve its diverse client base.

Flink Maswick Law has offices in Lake Placid, Tupper Lake, and the Capital District. Its home base of operation is at 2577 Main Street in Lake Placid. FM Law traces its roots back to the law firm that was established at that building 50 years ago by Favor R. Smith, who merged his practice with Ed Flink’s law firm in 2004, as Flink and his firm were looking to establish a Lake Placid office to serve its rapidly growing client base.

Ed Flink and Jamey Maswick, both St. Lawrence University grads, teamed up shortly thereafter, Maswick joining what was then Flink Smith Law while he was a law student at Albany Law School from which both he and Flink also graduated.

Molly Shubert Hann joined FM Law on April 2, 2022. Molly and Ed met in the 1990s when Molly waited on tables in Lake Placid, and Molly met Jamey in court while she interned with the Essex County Public Defender's Office. Molly grew up in Lake Placid, lives in Saranac Lake, and like Ed and Jamey, obtained her B.A. at St. Lawrence University. Molly focuses her practice on real estate transactions, estate planning and probate, small business, and not-for-profit law. Molly anchors FM Law's Tupper Lake Office.

Jill E. O'Sullivan joined FM Law in November 2021 on an of-counsel basis. Jill had met Ed years earlier while she was in private practice, engaged in insurance defense work, and knew Jamey from her time serving as Principal Law Clerk for a New York State Supreme Court Justice. Jill is originally from downstate New York but relocated to the Lake George area in 2002.  Jill focuses her practice on civil litigation.

Attorney Edward B. Flink of Flink Maswick Law, Lake Placid NY

Ed, his wife Ellen of over 46 years and their three children have had a strong connection to the North Country for over 50 years. Ed and Ellen were both raised in Essex County New Jersey and both always loved the peace and serenity of the woods which were in abundance in North Jersey at the time. Coming to St. Lawrence in the fall of 1969, Ed majored in English and studied Art, Eastern thought and the Humanities and began a lifelong passion for running and yoga. Whether by fate or providence, while Favor R. Smith was opening his law office in 1970, Ed first visited the Tri-Lakes region, skiing at Big Tupper and Whiteface and coming to Lake Placid for his fraternity’s Spring weekend. After graduating from Albany Law School, Ed’s first job as an attorney was as an associate in the litigation department at the Hinman, Howard & Kattell firm in Binghamton for six years where he first started to try cases, also handling real estate matters for the firm’s clients including banks. In 1983 Ed and Ellen moved to back to Albany so Ed could start his own firm with a law school classmate. Other than two brief stints with Buffalo-based firms Saperston & Day in 1983-1984 and Hurwitz & Fine in 2017-2018, Ed has had his own firm for the past 37 years. Not long after moving back to Albany the Flinks decided they wanted their family to spend time in the North Country, and bought their first home in Lake Placid in 1989. Ed was building his North Country practice since then and purchased the building where the law firm is located in 2004. Within a few years of that and especially after their three children had all graduated from college, Ed and Ellen started to spend most of their time in Lake Placid fulfilling their dream to make their home in Essex County, New York where they now live full time.

Attorney James L. Maswick of Flink Maswick Law PLLC in Lake Placid NY

Jamey grew up in the Capital District but always viewed Lake Placid as his second home. His family visited Lake Placid regularly as he grew up, investing in a modest home in Lake Placid in the late 1990s. Jamey spent much of his formative years running, skiing, biking, hiking, and swimming in the Adirondacks and Lake Placid, passions in which he continues to participate. Ed and Jamey, both St. Lawrence University grads from different eras, met at an SLU networking function at the Fort Orange Club in Albany in Fall 2006 when Jamey was a first-year law student at Albany Law and Ed was a well-established and respected trial attorney with his own law firm. Ed and Jamey hit it off with much in common, including the connection to Lake Placid, and when Jamey saw a part-time law clerk position available at Ed’s firm, he applied for it and got the job. This started a now-14-year professional relationship together, which continues to grow. Jamey, his wife Caitlin, and their daughter Meghan live in Lake Placid.

Ed and Jamey share a common sense of values, including a commitment to family, their community, the legal profession, and their clients whom they have been grateful to represent over their legal careers.

Their approach to the practice of law and, not coincidently life, is also similar – being deeply observational and thoughtful, understanding human nature, and using compassion and empathy to help their clients solve their problems and develop their opportunities efficiently and economically. They treat their clients, staff, and colleagues in the profession with kindness, respect, and integrity seeking a collaborative approach even in litigation wherever possible, backed up by the skill and experience necessary to prevail in court and at trial when necessary.

Ed and Jamey sensed the opportunity to grow their practice and to serve the entire North Country community where they have made their homes and are raising their children, and, in Ed’s case, his grandchildren.

Building History

Cornerstone of Flink Maswick Law dated 1921

Our building sits on the site of the original North Woods Inn property.  What you are looking at in this photo was part of the North Woods Inn's foundation that was still in place after a fire destroyed the Inn.  When Favor R. Smith established his firm at this site, building a new structure in 1970, he used part of the existing foundation, which included this piece of stone with, we assume, one of the worker's initials and the year 1921. When the building was renovated in 2008-2009 with an addition placed on the building front,  we used this stone at the new entrance to  the law office as a monument to the building's history.

Entrance to conference room at Flink Maswick Law in Lake Placid, New York

This glass and the wood-paneled door was the front door to the law office from 1970 to 2009.  When Flink and his law firm did the expansion and renovation in 2008 to 2009, the entrance door was changed. This door now serves as the door to Flink Maswick Law's conference room, having been repurposed as part of the renovation. This is the door looking out from the conference room to the second-floor hallway.

Menu and Photos of the original Northwoods Inn, Lake Placid, New York

When the Flinks bought the building from Favor Smith, the sale included these framed pieces: two photos of the original North Woods Inn on the right and a framed piece on the left that includes a postcard looking down from the top of the hill towards the hotel (top), a photo of the Inn partly obscured by a float during a 4th of July parade (bottom) and a menu from the Inn in the middle when diners could buy soup for 15 to 20 cents, "HOT DISHES" such as Eggs were ranging from 2 for 35 cents or with ham or bacon for 50 cents. Or you could get Creamed Chicken for 50 cents, a cup of coffee for 10 cents, or a pot for 20 cents.
